Greetings sentients,
I have a long and checkered past, much longer and much more checkered than anyone I know personally, though I have heard rumors of a man in Knebworth. I've fought countless battles on dozens of worlds, had dealings with the lowest of the low and the highest of the high, heard from the big man Himself on an occassion or two, and even died once or twice. It's a long story, quite literally.
But of the foes I have come up against, I have only met two things that cannot be beaten, and one other that can defeat me on a regular basis.
Apathy and obsession are what cannot be beaten. Apathy cannot be fought, so it cannot be beaten. If someone doesn't care, no amount of prompting, cajoling or threatening will move them. You might as well give an apathetic person up for lost, you aren't going to reach them.
Obsession can be fought tooth and nail, but there's no point unless you yourself are obsessed, in which case you could at least hope for the match to be declared a draw.
"We're not obsessed by anything, you see," insisted Ford. "And that's the deciding factor. We can't win against obsession. They care, we don't. They win."
- Life, the Universe, and Everything
Ford goes on to make that point that obsessed people are willing to die for their cause, which makes all the difference. Even if you manage to stop an obsessed person, which means you've killed them, you haven't won, they've simply carried their obsession through to its ultimate end, and you helped them do it.
Boredom is that which defeats me on occassion. Boredom is not so much a product of having nothing to do, but an inabiliy to choose one course of action and enjoy it, without worrying about the notion that something else could be accomplished instead. This is usually because I have homework to be done and would rather write, read or play. I am unable to go enjoy myself because of my strong responsible obligation to finish my homework, but am unable to complete the homework because of my strong abhorance of the work to be done.
Such paralysis is the reason this note was written with such a morose tone. I have Chinese homework to complete and thinking about starting on it makes my teeth grind together.
I should just go eat something.
Because I have to...
